Arcane Writer Shares League of Legends Region They’re Interested to Explore Next

Although Arcane has just wrapped up, the popular animated series based on League of Legends has already sparked multiple spinoffs. A detailed analysis on that has been shared by the eminent writers regarding its upcoming shows.

Arcane

League of Legends presents a huge world with varied and unique regions, each with its intriguing history.

Arcane explored the sharp differences between Piltover and Zaun, with Piltover, known as the “City of Progress,” being a center of upgraded technology.

Zaun, in contrast, happens to be a polluted city, rife with crime, hardship, and monstrous champions.

Arcane Writer Shares League of Legends Region They’re Interested to Explore Next

Its residents are focused on daily survival. One Arcane writer shared his intention to shift to a different region for the spinoffs, leaving Zaun and Piltover behind.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Arcane writer Amanda Overton discussed the future of the spinoffs and expressed interest in exploring the region of Ionia.

This is what she preferred to share with the outlet, “I’m excited to explore Ionia because it brings an Eastern-inspired narrative and visual style, which is a completely different direction from what we saw in Season 1 of Arcane.”

She further added that she wanted to take the upcoming story to a new region. Having already featured Noxus prominently in Arcane, she felt it was time to take the show in an entirely new direction. “We incorporated a lot of Noxus into Arcane,” she explained.

She further added, “For me, it’s about doing something entirely fresh.” Christian Linke, co-creator of Arcane, had earlier revealed that as many as 3 spinoffs were in the works following the end of Arcane, each set in one of three regions: Demacia, Ionia, and Noxus.

What Overton Shared?

Beyond choosing her preferred region, Overton shared her appreciation from different areas and their distinct narratives. She was especially drawn to the female leaders of Freljord, a cold, icy land inhabited by tribal communities.

She continued, “There’s a wealth of amazing champions and rich regions to explore. I’m excited about the idea of showcasing a matriarchy, especially in Freljord, because I don’t think we’ve seen that on TV before I thought, ‘Yes, this is something new.'”

The writer pointed out that Runeterra is home to numerous distinctive and intriguing characters, implying that fans can anticipate additional stories beyond the 3 spinoffs.

Please note that Overton picked Ionia, as it stands out to be one of the most visually captivating regions in League of Legends. Its peaceful forests, enchanting temples, lush landscapes, and ancient ruins make it a truly striking place.

Ionia carries a serene, dreamlike essence, where magic and spirituality intertwine. The people there aim for peace and balance, offering a contrast to the chaos seen in Arcane.

The region is basically a harmonious blend of combat, magic, and life. Further, ionians are deeply rooted in their spiritual practices, with martial arts and meditation being central to their cultural identity.

There are some growing tensions that can be seen with Noxus and internal conflicts that add depth. It’s a region full of magic and beauty, yet with enough intrigue and struggle to provide all the action and drama. Now, moving the story to Ionia would certainly offer a refreshing shift from Arcane.

Arcane Season 2 Episode 7: A Review

The Expense of Arcane Could Have Led Riot Games to Step Back from Hollywood

While Arcane Season 2 garnered strong critical acclaim, similar to its first season, a new report reveals that the steep production costs were a major factor in Riot Games‘ hasty departure from Hollywood.

Arcane Season 2

The visually impressive Arcane League of Legends series was undoubtedly designed keeping the game’s fans in mind, though Riot Games likely expected it to boost engagement with the game and their broader offerings.

While Arcane’s 2nd season received a generally positive response, it faced some fan backlash, with viewers feeling it was rushed. The creators later issued an apology against the undesired episode.

An entirely new finding explores Riot’s nuanced reaction to the series’ success and challenges, highlighting how Arcane led the company to reconsider its future plans in Hollywood.

A Stunning High-Cost Series

Bloomberg’s report reveals that Riot had a lot riding on Arcane. To guarantee the series’ high quality, the company chose to self-finance, that resulted in two widely praised seasons, including an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program. Despite this success, Riot invested approximately $250 million into both the seasons.

If you look at the cost factor, it’s somewhat reduced by distribution partnerships with Netflix and Tencent in China. Both of them have agreed to pay almost $3 million for each episode.

The above payments further expected to cover way less than half of the overall expenses.

A Riot spokesperson shared in the report that “Arcane has been a success by our internal standards,” and mentioned that the second season is “expected to at least break even financially.

The lack of profitability is simply traced to challenges in creating tie-ins for League of Legends.

Paul Bellezza, the producer, confessed, “We were caught off guard by the success of season one,” and recognized that this led to missed chances for in-game activations.

Although the expensive Arcane series may not lead to financial losses for Riot, there will be no 3rd season, as the creators have confirmed that the two seasons already told a complete story.

Furthermore, after a year that saw almost 11% of Riot’s workforce laid off, the report indicates that the company is steadily shifting its focus away from major Hollywood projects and back toward its gaming roots.

The above shift clearly seems to be a part of a broader retreat by the company, which had expanded its entertainment team in 2020, bringing in Shauna Spenley from Netflix to strengthen its ties to the entertainment world.

Since then, Spenley and some major personalities are known to have left, and the company now concentrating on its main gaming values.

A Riot representative shared with Bloomberg, “Our primary focus is on fostering long-term player engagement. Riot has always been dedicated to creating games and experiences that players will continue to enjoy, and Arcane simply fits into that larger vision.”

In fact, it’s a great outcome for all the League of Legends fans. Meanwhile Riot is careful not to criticize Arcane series they still highly praise and could potentially expand with future projects.

The massive financial commitment that didn’t significantly boost their core business likely played a role in their decision to return to their core focus.

Arcane: Celebrated by Critics, Struggling Commercially?

Despite its widespread acclaim and the buzz surrounding its second season, Arcane, the popular League of Legends spin-off, has not fared well commercially, with its financial outcomes failing to match its critical success.

arcane

A Bloomberg report revealed that a Riot representative confirmed the series broke even financially but didn’t achieve commercial success, despite its widespread acclaim on leading online platforms,

There seems a plethora of reasons against this outcome. Riot appears to have been without a solid plan to recover the money invested.

They also took on excessive financial commitments, particularly in promoting the show and hosting the related award ceremonies.

The project ended up costing more than projected and fell short of the team’s expected returns. Moreover, it didn’t significantly enhance engagement with Arcane League of Legends.

Arcane: Celebrated by Critics, Struggling Commercially?

The minimal support for Arcane League of Legends is unsurprising, given the weak link between the show and the game.

Well, unlike other companies that often include in-game events or special rewards to promote such crossovers, Riot mainly opted for a handful of character skins.

This limited effort was unlikely to attract new players, particularly since League of Legends is a complex game with a steep learning curve that can be daunting for upcoming gamers.

Riot may not see an instant profit, but there seems to be a clear chance in the long run to grab success. If their agreement with Netflix includes royalties, they could benefit as more people watch and revisit the show over time.

The results will become clear with time. As fans, we can only hope the show thrives, who wouldn’t want more series like Arcane?

It would be disappointing if this discouraged Riot. Perhaps this experience will also lead them to improve the onboarding process for new players.

Arcane’s Future: Continuations & Spin-Offs In the Works

 In Short:

  • Arcane has officially concluded, but future projects are being explored.
  • Showrunner Christian Linke confirmed plans for spin-offs and continuations.
  • None of these projects have entered “full production” as of now.
  • Ideas for these expansions are being actively and “aggressively” developed

arcane

Christian Linke, Arcane’s co-creator, shared insights about the future of the series according to which both spin-offs are actively in the works with substantial dedication.

Almost 3 years after pulling off the remarkable feat of sparking interest in playing League of Legends, Arcane has wrapped up its compelling run on Netflix with a succinct yet impactful two-season haul.

Although our journey with Caitlyn, Vi, and Jinx has come to a close for now, plans for additional series set in the League of Legends universe are already underway.

Ranking Every League of Legends Champion Appearing In Arcane

After Arcane wrapped up a few months ago, a few fans pointed out not to produce more seasons. Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill subsequently suggested that new narratives within the same universe are being planned.

Although details about Arcane’s future have been scarce, a recent interview indicates that there are numerous possibilities that are being explored.

More League of Legends-Based Series Being Actively Developed

Recently, The Direct had the opportunity to interview Christian Linke, the showrunner and co-creator of Arcane, discussing the series and the potential spin-offs in development.

When questioned about the status of these projects, Linke was candid and provided a significant update.

Linke revealed that several projects have emerged from Arcane, and the team is actively working on refining these ideas and determining the next steps.

While none of these projects are currently in “full production,” he acknowledged that a few are being developed “aggressively.”

Linke also pointed out that while some projects will be connected to Arcane, not all of them will follow its storyline. A number of upcoming developments will focus on fresh characters, though a few will continue the storylines introduced in Arcane.

While it’s encouraging news for Arcane fans, with no projects fully underway yet and ideas still in the early stages, it looks like the wait might be a lengthy one. However, given the massive success of the show, it’s understandable to give the team all the time they need to craft something truly special.

She further expresses, “Ionia’s storytelling and visuals, inspired by Eastern influences, provide a completely unique perspective compared to what Arcane explored in Arcane Season 1.”

To keep things fresh, she’s eager to explore new territory, which is why she’s not focused on Noxus. “Since we already explored Noxus extensively in Arcane, I think it’s time to dive into something completely new.

Overton remains intrigued by champions from various regions, noting, “There are countless fascinating champions to explore and many rich stories to uncover.

Overton finds the abundance of potential characters particularly captivating. “There are so many fascinating characters,” she shares, and I’m always seeking opportunities to tell stories where characters discover common ground despite their differences.

“Runeterra’s diverse intelligent life and unique characters offer endless storytelling opportunities,” Overton notes. “The variety sparks incredible conflicts and allows for exploring the champions’ differences while finding unexpected commonalities.”

Arcane Sound Designers Penny Harold & Andy Lange On Shaping the Series Finale Through Audio

Season 2 of Arcane concluded the Netflix animated series with intense drama and grandeur, while also laying the groundwork for future League of Legends-inspired projects from Riot Games.

Arcane

The series masterfully portrayed the complex relationship between sisters Jinx and Vi with mature themes and stunning visuals, thanks to Fortiche’s exceptional animation, while also introducing other League of Legends champions like Heimerdinger, Ekko, Caitlyn, and Viktor.

The Arcane Season 2 finale featured the most heart-wrenching scenes, as Vi helplessly watches Jinx appear to meet her end.

The success of that scene, along with the rest of the series, is partly due to the expertise of re-recording mixer Penny Harold and sound mixer Andy Lange, both recognized with Emmy nominations for their contributions to shows like Only Murders in the Building.

The early action-packed sequences to the pivotal scene of Jinx’s presumed demise (or survival?), Harold and Lange masterfully crafted a balanced blend of music, dialogue, and sound design, ensuring the story remained emotionally impactful and focused.

Harold’s role as a re-recording mixer involved primarily working with dialogue and music, while Lange’s expertise was in crafting the sound effects.

ScreenRant interviewed Penny Harold and Andy Lange to discuss their roles in shaping the sound for Arcane, especially in the impactful finale.

They both discussed their role in crafting the ending of Arcane season 2, including how they teamed up with sound technicians and Alex Seaver, the show’s music producer, co-composer, and songwriter.

Andy Lange & Penny Harold Discuss Crafting the Powerful, Immersive Sound of Arcane for Audiences

Penny Harold while replying to Screen Rant stated that they simply focused on making the sound as immersive and emotional as the visuals, using dialogue to match the intensity of each character’s moment. For action scenes, we added powerful industrial sounds to enhance the stakes.

Andy Lange said that they better crafted the sound design to reflect the show’s grand yet intimate tone, balancing intense action with subtle moments. The goal was to make every scene feel both epic and emotionally grounded.

When he was asked the way he manages to collaborate, he stated they We often work separately, tackling different scenes at the same time. For most shows, this would be simpler, but with Arcane, it’s more challenging because it’s such a loud, dynamic series.

Penny Harold: For big sound design sequences, like the Black Rose scenes in season two, I would have to step back while Andy focused on that part of the work

Andy Lange further stated that they tend to work on separate premixes for scenes, with me holding off on the music and Andy delaying the Foley mix. Once wthey’re in sync, they handle those elements in the final pass.

Penny was further asked by Screen Rant about the kind of things they are inclined to so that viewers never lose their interest hearing the dialogue, especially things go crazy in the show.

Penny Harold further stated that they had to handle it with precision. While season one presented its challenges, season two raised a few stakes with a larger scale, especially with the inclusion of more major needle-drop songs, which made some scenes even more difficult to mix.

Penny Harold said that they tone down the music to highlight a dramatic sound effect, and Andy adjusts swiftly to bring the music back in. The music is the focal point, especially during those crucial scenes.

When Penny was asked if there was any specific composer he dealt with, he said We ultimately chose the CLA-76 after experimenting with various options. It was the one that fit our needs perfectly.

He was again asked if sound effets were placed later than their effects, he chose to say that Our skilled sound designers, Eliot Connors and Brad Beaumont, are internal Riot team members who collaborate closely with Alex Seaver and Alex Temple from the music department, well before the sound reaches us.

They have a deep understanding of both the music and sound design, enabling early collaboration, which is unusual in TV production. Usually, sound supervisors and editors work separately, making this process particularly unique.

Lange & Harold Explore Crucial Moments in Arcane Season 2 Finale

In episode nine, certain sounds were filtered and creatively modified. Is that mainly the result of sound design, or do you apply additional effects to amplify the scene.

Animation typically undergoes many revisions. Were there any scenes in Arcane Season 2 that looked drastically different in their initial stages compared to the final version?

We had an extended three-week period to mix episode nine, which is unusual for TV. While it was a considerable amount of time, every second was essential, with a brief pause between the first and second week.

The very first week consisted of a rough mix, with some picture modifications made afterward. Scenes were either shortened or lengthened, but there weren’t any significant changes. The final picture wasn’t ready during our initial pass.

Lange & Harold Reflect on the Lessons Gleaned From Their Work on Arcane

From your experience on both seasons of Arcane, are there any valuable takeaways or practices you’d like to see other League of Legends shows adopt?

Penny Harold reacts by saying Riot Games is unique in that linear entertainment isn’t their primary focus, yet they consistently set incredibly high standards for themselves. Frankly, I don’t feel the need to advise them—they’re naturally driven to make their projects as grand and impactful as they can be.

He further continued with the conversation by saying, “I’ve carried the lessons from working on this show into other projects and universes, always asking, “Is this good enough? Yes. But how can we elevate it further?”

As per ScreenRant.com, he elaborated by saying that in post-production, we often follow established processes, but sometimes it’s worth questioning if things must be done a certain way. It’s about approaching work with openness, embracing creativity, and letting inspiration guide the direction.

Exploring New Horizons In Arcane Season 2

Television adaptations of video games are rarely successful, with many, such as Mortal Kombat, failing to impress. However, League of Legends stands as a notable exception.

Arcane Season 2

Released in November 2021, Arcane marked its animated inception based on the League of Legends universe, created to explore its rich lore.

After 8 years of development, the show received widespread praise, achieving a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and making history as the first series to have rated above 9/10 on leading web portal IMDb.

Arcane managed to accumulate more than 35 million views in its very first week, mainly showcasing its compelling storytelling.

This achievement was followed by a prestigious win at the Primetime Emmy Awards, where it took home the Outstanding Animated Program honor.

Exploring New Horizons In Arcane Season 2

The series delves into the relationship between Vi and Jinx, two sisters from the Undercity.

Its quite richly detailed world and captivating plot are impressive, but what truly sets it apart is the exceptional development of every character associated.

The show mainly features a dynamic ensemble of characters who are both relatable and thoughtfully developed.

Rather than relying on traditional good-versus-evil archetypes, it delves into the moral complexities of individuals shaped by their histories and circumstances.

Arcane basically stands out visually with its seamless fusion of 2D and 3D animation, enriched by meticulously hand-painted frames, delivering a distinctive style that elevates the boundaries of conventional animation.

Heimerdinger & Ekko Easily Spotted

For League fans, a major thrill comes from identifying champions through their Arcane versions. While Heimerdinger and Ekko were easily spotted, some required more effort to discern.

Arcane goes beyond fan service, with its relatable themes, emotional depth, and surprising plot developments, making it captivating even for those who are unfamiliar with the characters’ backstories.

After waiting for almost 2 years, the eagerly awaited second season of Arcane arrived, with the final act of the series launching on November 23. It quickly became a global hit, reaching the top of Netflix in almost 60 different countries.

Capitalizing on the success of its first season, Arcane season two quickly captivated audiences. Continuing from the intense conclusion of season one, the new season delves deeper into the larger social and political consequences of the choices made in the previous chapters.

Season 2 looks quite action-packed, offering intense confrontations that highlight the escalating conflict between Zaun, and Piltover, the city of innovation, the gritty undercity lurking beneath.

A third season would have provided more opportunity to delve deeper into certain plot elements and further enhance character development. Nonetheless, Arcane still stands out as an exceptional series.

While Arcane has officially wrapped up, there are still plenty of untold stories for fans to look forward to.

Mark Merrill, co-founder of Riot Games, shared that Arcane is only the beginning of many more stories set in Runeterra. Zaun and Piltover represent just two of the 11 regions, with plans for future expansions of the world in the years ahead.
