Co-producer Christian Linke jokingly responded with, “Destruction of the vocal booths.” Purnell laughed and shared that she throws herself fully into her performance, often getting so animated that she makes karate chop motions, creates various sound effects, and sometimes even breaks equipment while recording her role as Jinx.

 

In addition to voicing Jinx, Ella Purnell has had a remarkable few years, starring in the post-apocalyptic drama Fallout.

She also appeared briefly as Jackie in the first season of Yellowjackets, with rumors circulating that she may return in a ghostly form in season three.

Riot Games’ ambitions in Hollywood faltered due to inexperience, resulting in $250M spent on producing 18 episodes of the Netflix series.

Arcane is set to make its Netflix comeback on Nov. 9, facing the challenge of surpassing its stellar first season, which won four Emmy Awards in 2022, including Outstanding Animated Program, and ranked as the top TV show in 85 countries worldwide.

Despite plans for a five-season storyline, Arcane’s second season has already been confirmed as its last.

Notably, it remains the sole TV or film project developed by Riot Games, even though the Los Angeles-based gaming giant charted an ambitious path into scripted entertainment nearly five years ago.

Riot Games, the company behind League of Legends and the Arcane series, recruited top-tier executives from major media firms with the vision of creating a comprehensive entertainment division. Their aim was to produce a variety of live-action and animated TV shows and films based on Riot’s popular franchises.

Former CEO Nicolo Laurent emphasized his vision by boldly declaring in an interview that he was working to establish the “entertainment company of the 21st century.”

Despite all its ambitious plans, Riot has little to show beyond Arcane, which sources say cost the company around $250 million to create and market across 18 episodes, making it by far the most expensive animated series ever, both on streaming platforms and traditional TV.

According to insiders from that time, Riot’s extravagant spending and unfulfilled goals were largely due to the company’s inexperience in handling the complexities of the entertainment production process.

Riot co-founder and chief product officer Marc Merrill emphasized the company’s ongoing commitment to producing high-quality film and TV content, though he acknowledged the challenges they faced in the process.

Merrill didn’t directly confirm the $250 million figure but emphasized, “We’re fully confident in the investment made to produce a show that truly honors our players’ time.

Riot, despite its various challenges, in Hollywood, has been a powerhouse in the gaming world since 2009 when “League of Legends” launched. The online multiplayer game now boasts 180 million monthly active players globally, along with its expanding lineup of spinoffs.

As “League of Legends” itself is free to play, Riot’s primary revenue, totaling around $3 billion last year, came from in-game purchases like “skins,” a standard revenue model in live-service games.

Riot simply expanded its reach into both esports and music, with its headquarters spread across several buildings in Santa Monica. Not long ago, the company was one of the top office space tenants in Los Angeles, displaying its recognizable fist logo across multiple structures.

“Arcane” was conceived by Christian Linke and Alex Yee, members of Riot’s player support team who, despite lacking experience in production, envisioned a TV show based on the “Legends” universe.

It all happened in 2016 when Riot made the bold decision to give Linke and Yee the green light to create a pilot, partnering with Fortiche, a Parisian animation studio that had previously collaborated with the company on music videos and short promotional pieces.

Insiders familiar with the production revealed that the first nine 40-minute episodes of Arcane cost over $80 million, while the upcoming second set of nine episodes is nearing a budget of $100 million.

According to sources, the significant increase in costs for Arcane can be attributed to the detailed and labor-heavy production process, as well as consistent budget overruns.

These issues arose after the second season began production with only a portion of the script completed, causing delays in script deliveries and further escalating costs

Even more surprising than the production costs was Riot’s investment of $60 million from its own budget to market the first season of Arcane. This amount is well above what a typical studio would allocate for a show it doesn’t own, and notably larger than Netflix’s own promotional expenditures. Netflix declined to comment on the issue.

The spending raises further questions, especially since Riot already had a large player base from Legends and other games to help promote the series at a lower cost. Instead, they invested heavily in lavish stunts, including a takeover of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.

The marketing budget for the second season is not publicly available, but it’s anticipated to be much smaller than the first season’s.

Although the exact marketing costs for the second season are unclear, they are expected to be much lower than those of the first season.

Despite its billions in revenue from virtual products and slim profit margins, Riot pressed forward with its Hollywood ambitions, undeterred by the hefty expenses.

He finds himself in an alternate world where Hextech was never created, allowing characters like Benzo, Silco, Mylo, Claggor, and Vander to still be alive.

In this reality, the undercity and topside live in peace. However, Vi is revealed to have died in the explosion at Jayce’s Piltover apartment, which the group had robbed in the series’ first episode.

In this version of events, Powder never becomes Jinx and instead is a well-adjusted and charismatic teenager.

When Ekko encounters Heimerdinger, he learns that his friend was also transported to this timeline by the anomaly, though he arrived years earlier than Ekko.

Ekko and Heimerdinger collaborate to create an anomaly that will help them return home. To fuel their plan, they extract shards from the magic crystal responsible for the explosion that killed Vi.

 

Arcane Season 2 Episode 7

In Arcane Season 2 Episode 7, connecting with Powder, Ekko enlists her help, and together they build a device that can reverse time for up to four seconds (the Z-Drive from League of Legends).

Heimerdinger focuses on enhancing the machine to ensure it will send them back to their original reality.

As they work, Ekko chooses to savor his remaining time in this alternate world. A memorable moment comes in the form of a beautifully animated dance between Ekko and Powder, where they experience a brief moment of youthful joy and romance.

The episode also features an emotional conversation between Powder and Ekko, where they share their feelings for each other, leaving Ekko with renewed hope for the Jinx he knows in his reality.

 

Heimerdinger Makes a Final Sacrifice

Upon returning to Heimerdinger, Ekko discovers that the scientist has made considerable progress on their machine, which is now ready to send them back to their original reality.

As they prepare to leave together, Heimerdinger chooses to remain behind and operate the device.

When the anomaly is triggered, it successfully transports Ekko out of the alternate reality, but it seems to come at the expense of Heimerdinger’s life.

Jayce Faces His Worst Nightmares 

In Episode 6 of Season 2, Jayce returns as a significantly altered version of himself, and Episode 7 reveals why. He wakes up in a devastated Piltover, ruined by the arcane.

The city now consists of twisted humanoid figures and vibrant corruption that covers everything, creating a stunning yet horrifying sight thanks to Fortiche’s brilliant animation.

As Jayce tumbles into a deep crevice and injures his leg, the madness of this world begins to take hold. 

A chilling montage depicts Jayce as he painstakingly constructs a device to support his leg, all while the days slip by, his physical condition worsens, and the eerie humanoids draw nearer, haunting him with the guilt of his past.

Eventually, Jayce climbs out of the chasm and makes his way through the decaying city to the remains of the Hexgate, where he discovers the body of a person kneeling with a hammer.

Jayce comes to the stark realization that the ruined future he encountered is a direct result of Hextech. 

In a conversation with the cloaked mage from his past, he pleads for a way to reverse the damage, desperate for one last chance. Shortly after, he’s transported back to his original timeline, aligning with the Jayce seen in Episode 5.

While Ekko returns from the alternate reality filled with hope, Jayce’s experience has the opposite effect.

It solidifies his resolve to dismantle his life’s work, hoping to prevent the horrific future he witnessed from ever coming to pass.
